A dog's name should only be used when positively interacting with the animal. Call the dog's name to get him to come to your side or call his name when you are serving his dinner. Don't, however, call your dog's name when you are unhappy with his or her actions. The dog would negatively associate that with punishment.
TIP! Treats are not the mainstay for rewarding your pet when training. Dogs will learn that if you give them a treat for a response they should expect it always.
Dogs often become destructive because they are bored and lonely. Consider a house dog that destroys the sofa while you are away from the house. Consider the larger outside dog that chews up the shrubbery. The answer to alleviating their destructive behavior might be as simple as spending more time with them or buying them a new toy.
Dogs can have a one-track mind and remain focused on one thing until you break the dog out of it. If you get your dog to focus on you, it will help his behavior.
TIP! Play with your dog often. In order to train your dog efficiently, it is important to develop and nurture a bond between the two of you.
When you first get your puppy don't expect him to learn a large number of commands in a short amount of time. Your puppy needs time to acclimate to his new environment. During this time, it is possible to teach him two or three simple commands. Do not move on to other commands until your puppy has mastered these.
Take everything that your friends and family members say about your training program with a grain of salt. Everyone will have their own opinions about how you should help your pet learn to follow directions. Ignore most of it and do what you know is best for you and your pet.
TIP! If your dog is misbehaving, try to determine why. It is important to work out why your dog is doing what it does.
When a dog lives in a house that does not have any small children or older adults living in it, the owner should go out of their way to introduce their dog to those types of people. By introducing them in a controlled situation, one can train their dog how to act around those types of people if they are ever over at the home.
As a new dog owner, you are faced with many challenges. Hopefully if you follow the steps presented in this article, you will be much closer to being able to successfully train your new dog and have a better understanding of what goes into dog ownership and training.
